King Kamehameha III celebrated his birthday on March 17th because of a deep admiration of St Patrick. He is responsible for bringing in the Vaquero (Mexican Cowboy) to teach Hawaiians how to ranch and tend to cattle. He founded both Lahainaluna & Punahou Schools. He developed a system of land division and ownership under the Great Mahele of 1848. He also wrote the Hawai’i Kingdom Motto: Ua Mau ke Ea o ka ʻĀina i ka Pono.
